If you're looking into a new barcode system, you've probably come across RFID too. So what's the difference?
Both barcode and RFID systems help businesses keep track of inventory, products, equipment, and assets. The biggest difference is how they read information.
What Is a Barcode?
A barcode is printed on a label and scanned with a barcode scanner. The scanner needs to see the barcode, so each item is scanned one at a time.
Barcode systems are a great choice because they're affordable, reliable, and work for almost every business.
A barcode system is usually the best option if you:
- Print product or shipping labels
- Scan items one at a time
- Want a lower-cost solution
- Need a proven system that works
What Is RFID?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification.
Instead of printing a barcode, RFID uses a small chip inside a label or tag. RFID readers use radio waves, so they don't need to see the label to read it.
That means you can scan multiple items at once, even if they're inside boxes or stacked on a pallet.
RFID is a good choice if you:
- Need faster inventory counts
- Track expensive equipment or assets
- Want better inventory accuracy
- Move a large number of products every day
RFID costs more than a barcode system, but it can save time and labor for businesses that scan a lot of inventory.
What Is GS1 Sunrise 2027?
Many businesses are also preparing for GS1 Sunrise 2027.
By the end of 2027, retailers are expected to support 2D barcodes, such as QR Codes and Data Matrix codes, along with traditional UPC barcodes.
These new barcodes can store more information, including serial numbers, expiration dates, and lot numbers.
If you're buying new barcode printers today, it's worth making sure they're ready for 2D barcodes.
Should You Choose Barcode or RFID?
Choose a barcode system if you want an affordable, dependable way to label and track products.
Choose RFID if you need to scan lots of items quickly and improve inventory accuracy.
Some businesses use both. RFID labels can also include a printed barcode, giving you the speed of RFID while keeping barcode compatibility.
